A Breakthrough

Yesterday in my 1st hour class, a majority of students aid they didn't think hate speech was a very big deal, and that "people just overreact." I was looking for a way to bring some of the ideas home to them, hopefully without bashing them over the head and turning them off completely. I started by asking them to think about the truth of the old adage about sticks and stones, then asked them to write about a time they felt picked on--something that stuck with them. The we walked through the images in the powerpoint.
I'm feeling much better after today's discussion, and thought some of you might find it valuable as well.
I'd love to talk about this with anyone if they would like. Please feel free to use it with your classes (Creative Commons license). Hate Speech Racism
